As the world population ages and lifestyle demands increase pressure on healthcare budgets, it is important to look for more innovative solutions of providing healthcare.
There is already a trend away from centralized treatment and testing, which focuses primarily on acute and late interventions, to one which delivers care in a more patient-friendly way. It is predicted that within 10 years, some complex IVD tests will be taken out of the laboratory.
To be effective, the new tests must be easy to use, able to work with fingerpick samples of blood or saliva - and deliver lab quality results in under five minutes. Philips’ new Magnotech technology opens the door for change for the IVD industry.
Cardiology, oncology, woman’s health and chronic diseases - these are the disease areas of strategic interest for Philips.
Patients are more likely to be tested at the point of care: critical care treatment centers, ambulances, GP clinics and the home. It is hoped that this move towards rapid diagnostic test settings tailored to a more patient-friendly environment will result in better patient outcomes and the cost-effective use of resources. In addition, Philips is set to license the technology to IVD companies – those with a recognized expertise in the development of biomarkers for acute and chronic diseases, and partners providing strong channels into clinical care settings. The size of the potential partners is less important than their innovative expertise and distribution strengths. |
